Compost Station

Let's break it down

At Boxerwood, we try to reduce our waste wherever possible. Composting is our way of turning waste materials into valuable soil. We mix garden materials like leaves and grass with food scraps, letting helpful bugs turn it into rich organic soil. When things rot without air, like in landfills, methane gas gets generated, which is 20x worse than carbon dioxide for trapping heat in the atmosphere. Composting with air helps break down waste without making lots of methane. Plus, it gives us excellent fertilizer for our garden plants.

When students come to Boxerwood, we encourage them in many ways to be good stewards of the earth. During lunch in the garden, they compost their leftovers. Boxerwood also teams up with schools to bring composting into local lunchrooms. Students love being part of the composting process and making their schools more eco-friendly.

Anyone can get into composting, whether you live on a big farm or on a small urban lot. You can use backyard composters or even small table-top ones for your kitchen that handle food scraps and biodegradable stuff. Interested but not sure how to start composting? This article explains step by step how you can keep your family's food waste out of the landfill.
