Mountain Vistas

Big views, big chair

This open field is one of the highest points of the property and showcases spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east. We occasionally host performances and special events on the stage toward the bottom of the field.

Other attractions around the field include art installations that are meant to be used and eventually returned to the Earth. We often have a derelict piano “de-composing” in the field. Do you see the Big Chair near the top of the field? The big chair is one of the most photographed and sat-upon places at Boxerwood. It was crafted by local volunteer and engineer, Jay Sullivan, who also designs large installations for our holiday parade floats and events. You might find some of his other creations residing in the field today.

Throughout the garden, you will discover other art installations. Dr. Munger loved sculptures and a few of his original pieces are still here. Another Boxerwoodian, the late artist Devan Malore, created delightful works of art from reclaimed materials, tucking them away in spots all over the property. Many of his pieces are here in the field, including the cloud gazing bed and the LOVE sign that began as a bench and evolved into a playful piece for children to climb.
