Solar Array
The solar array provides energy for Boxerwood and also the private residence located within Boxerwood's boundaries. The Lodge (offices and meeting space) also uses a wood burning stove to supplement heat in the winter, but the solar panels were sized to cover all the elecrical needs of both structures.
The solar panels were installed in 2021 with the help of financial patronage and government solar grants. The panels have a 25 year practical lifespan, but may work for longer before needing replacing.
This project was the first project of Boxerwood's Carbon Offset Program, COREworks. If you have ever wanted to offset your carbon footprint, COREworks offers a chance to fund projects that either capture atmospheric carbon (tree planting) or reduce the production of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane (solar power and composting). The COREworks program provides education, volunteerism, and local on the ground projects that benefit Rockbridge County and beyond.
